Dr. William Carswell

In 2012, Dr. William Carswell became only the second Music Director and Conductor of the Masterworks Choir in its history, succeeding Founder and Conductor William B. Mills.  Known for his innovative programming and thoughtful interpretations of classical and contemporary works, Dr. Carswell, in less than two years, has expanded the repertoire of the Choir and excited our ever-growing audience with highly acclaimed performances of great choral-orchestral literature.  Prior to his appointment with the Masterworks Choir Dr. Carswell served for five seasons as Music Director and Conductor of the Columbia Choral Society.

A Coker College faculty member since 2002, Dr. William Carswell is an Associate Professor of Music in the Collegeís Department of Music, Theater and Dance.  He was also recently named Associate Provost for Academic Affairs.  In addition to conducting the Coker Singers, Chamber Singers, and Menís Vocal Ensemble, he has taught courses in choral literature, choral conducting and music education.  Dr. Carswell has appeared as a clinician, guest conductor or adjudicator across the Southeastern US, as well as in Austria, Bulgaria, England, and France.  He has presented sessions on choral literature, choral methods, and rehearsal techniques for various levels of the American Choral Directors Association and the National Association for Music Education.  Coker College choirs under his direction have been heard in such prestigious venues as the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the U.S. Capital in Washington, DC, the Koger Center for the Performing Arts in Columbia, S.C., Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, and at Carnegie Hall.  In February of this year the Coker Singers joined forces with the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra in a performance of Serge Prokofievís Alexander Nevsky.  This was the sixth collaboration between the two musical ensembles in eight years.

An accomplished conductor and educator, Dr. Carswell received the prestigious Excellence in Teaching Award by the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities in recognition of his accomplishments and commitment to excellence in collegiate teaching.  Dr. Carswell holds a D.M.A. degree in conducting from the University of South Carolina, a Master of Music degree in conducting from Florida State University, and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Appalachian State University.
