The Masterworks Choir of Florence recently completed a 10-day tour of Italy.  Thirty-eight singers, music director Dr. Will Carswell, accompanist Beverly Hazelwood, along with 18 spouses, relatives, and friends of the singers made up the travel group.

The schedule included three formal and two informal performances.  The first formal concert occurred as part of Sunday evening mass in St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice. The following morning the group enjoyed a pleasant walking tour of the “floating city.”

From Venice the entourage traveled to our sister city, Florence. After a guided tour in the city of Florence (Firenze), the choir presented a full concert on the final night of the Chianti Music Festival in the town of Castellina.  After the concert, choir members and guests enjoyed dinner with a local choral ensemble.  That group, which specializes in a capella singing, treated Masterworks members to an impromptu concert outside in the city center.

During a tour in the city of Lucca, the choir presented an informal concert in the Duomo, the city’s domed cathedral.  That day also included a tour of the home of the great opera composer, Giacomo Puccini.

As the group traveled to Rome, choir members had a walking tour of the city of Assisi, which included the beautiful Basilica of St. Francis.

Arriving in Rome, the choir presented an informal concert in the Church of San Marcello.

The first full day in Rome was exciting and eventful.  Most of the tour group devoted the morning to a tour of the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel.  Later that afternoon, the Masterworks Choir sang at the 5:00 pm mass in St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican.

That evening, accompanist Beverly Hazelwood, presented an organ recital in the Church of St. Ignazio, receiving a lengthy standing ovation by choir members and all those present.

The final day included a guided tour of ancient Rome followed by a Farewell Dinner at a wonderful local restaurant.
